Congratulations to North literacy teacher, Jennifer Henderson, for winning the Aurora Public School's Superintendent's Quarterly Award. Mrs. Henderson is a veteran teacher who has been with APS for fourteen years. She won this award for teaching with integrity and purpose, being personally motivated and committed to do what is best for students, staff, parents and North's community as a whole and for demonstrating the true meaning of going above and beyond. We're proud of Mrs. Henderson at North Middle School Health Sciences & Technology Campus!

Rowdy’s at North-Metro State College

On Monday, February 8th, Rowdy the Roadrunner, the official mascot of Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD), visited North Middle School Health
Sciences and Technology Campus students during lunch, accompanied by Mr. Ron Christian, the Assistant Athletic Director at MSCD. Mr. Christian spoke to students about Metro and the colleges on the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver, and the benefits of attending Metro State, including strong, championship athletic programs and 86 different college majors. North students had a great time with Rowdy who gave away many fun prizes, including free tickets to see a Roadrunner’s Men’s Basketball game for all students at North! Rowdy’s visit was one of many activities at North during “College Week,” a week dedicated to celebrating and reinforcing our vision in Aurora Public Schools (APS)that, “We will graduate every student with the choice to attend college without remediation.” College Week culminates with student-led, parent-teacher conferences and College Night on Wednesday, February 10^th from 4:00 until 7:30 p.m. Many colleges, universities, LIGHTS APS feeder high schools, and more will be represented that evening. All parents and students of all grade levels are invited to attend. We hope to see you there!

History Day Regional Competition

On Saturday, March 13, 2010 groups in the 7th and 8th grade Academy participated in the History Day competition at the Community College of Aurora. North Middle School Students competed with five middle schools in the Metro Denver region, Those schools include Our Lady of Fatima, Brookstone, Sky Vista, Scott Carpenter, and Legacy Academy. Also, some of the entries included home schooled students. As a result of their hard work, we have six groups who get to move on to the State finals. Yes, six amazing groups of our kids get to compete in the state history day finals with a chance to move on to the national finals in Washington D.C.

Living up to our new name "Health Sciences & Technology Campus" the North teams DOMINATED in the junior documentary category and the junior website category. The winners are as follows:

All of these groups will get to compete in the Colorado History Day Competition on May 1, 2010. The event will take place at the Auraria Higher Education Center in Denver. Everyone of these students worked very hard.

Moodle

Moodle is a web-based education platform that students at North are using in many, if not all, of their classes. All literacy and literacy technology classes are actively using it, and Science is starting to put it into practice as well. Moodle is a place where students can find and turn in assignments, find resources, and communicate with teachers and other students about their learning.

Poetic Power

At the end of Mr. Dudley's poetry genre study the students entered a contest at www.poeticpower.com. The publishers selected the top 35% or so to go into their anthology.

Those that were selected will be in the anthology for fall of 2009 (will actually be printed in a few months). Additionally, these students are still in the running for prizes associated with the actual competition.

APS Celebrates New Computer Kiosks at Town Center at Aurora

About 150 parents, students, staff and community members

attended a celebration for Aurora Public

Schools’ new computer kiosks at the Town Center at Aurora.

The kiosks allow parents to view their children’s Parent Portal

accounts, find information on the APS Web site, or browse mall shopping opportunities.

The Parent Portal is a secure, confidential Web site that allows parents to view current information about their child’s attendance, grades, class assignments and other resources. To access the Parent Portal, parents must request a Parent Portal ID from their child’s school to set up an account.

The kiosks are located on the first level of the mall at center court near Guest Services, and on the second level in the food court. The kiosks are a free service from Aurora Public Schools and the Town Center at Aurora.

In addition to a kiosk ribbon-cutting, the celebration spotlighted the 2009 “Cash for Class” winning schools, awarded a total of nearly $13,000. Cash for Class allows parents and students to earn points for APS schools by making purchases at any Town Center at Aurora store or by sharing their scholastic achievements. Congratulations to this year’s Cash for Class award-winning schools:

Aurora LIGHTS Students Visit WELLS Center

A group of Aurora LIGHTS students from the North Middle School Health Sciences and Technology Campus recently visited the Anschutz Medical Campus. The students went hands-on, minds-on, at the Work, Education and Lifelong Learning (WELLS) Center. The group interacted with medical professionals and took part in problem solving scenarios and the creative process.

Attention Parents and Students:

All students have received an I.D. and a lanyard to hold their I.D. last week. The expectation at NMS is that each and every student that enters into the building will wear their I.D. at all times. Displaying their I.D. so that all people can see them is an expectation during the school day as well as during all after school events in the building.

Staff and students at NMS are required to display their I.D.’s at all times because we truly want to have a safe and secure building. At first glance, we want to be able to identify any person that walks into the building as a visitor. Keeping the building safe and secure is a top priority for all staff members and administrators in the building.

If a student has lost his/her I.D., they can see Ms. Zubiate in the attendance office. The cost for replacement for an I.D. is:

$3 – for an individual I.D.

$1 – for a lanyard
